Thank you for choosing Mishawaka Ink Co., we want your tattoo to heal as beautifully as it was applied. Proper aftercare ensures your tattoo heals properly and lasts a lifetime. There are two common healing methods we recommend, depending on your skin type, tattoo location, and artist’s preference.
Both are effective when followed properly — please refer to the method your artist used or discussed with you and follow these instructions carefully.:
- Second Skin Method (Modern, low-maintenance healing using a breathable adhesive bandage)
- Traditional Method (Classic aftercare using ointments and open-air healing)
Second Skin Method:
1. Leave the Second Skin On
- Keep the bandage on for 24 to 72 hours, depending on your artist’s recommendation.
- It’s normal for fluid (plasma, ink, and blood) to collect under the bandage. This can look like a dark or cloudy liquid pocket — don’t worry!
2. Remove the Bandage Carefully
- Wash your hands first!
- Gently peel off the second skin under warm running water to loosen the adhesive.
- Remove slowly, stretching the bandage parallel to your skin rather than pulling it straight up.
3. Clean Your Tattoo
- Once the bandage is off, wash your tattoo gently with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap.
- Use your fingertips only — no cloths, sponges, or loofahs.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel or let it air-dry.
4. Apply Lotion as Needed
- Once your tattoo is clean and dry, apply a fragrance-free, gentle lotion (like Lubriderm, Eucerin, Aveeno, etc.) if the tattoo feels dry or tight.
- Do not over-moisturize — a thin layer is enough.
5. Do Not Re-bandage Unless Instructed
- Once the initial second skin is removed, do not reapply a new bandage unless advised by your artist.
6. Avoid the Following While Healing
- No swimming in pools, lakes, oceans, or hot tubs.
- No soaking in baths — stick to showers.
- No direct sun exposure or tanning beds.
- No scratching or peeling.
- Avoid tight clothing that might rub against the tattoo.
7. Peeling and Itching Are Normal
- Your tattoo will likely peel and itch like a sunburn. This is normal.
- Do not scratch, pick, or peel.
8. Healing Time
- Tattoos generally heal in 2–3 weeks with second skin.
- Some haze or dullness is normal during healing and will brighten once fully healed.
9. Watch for Signs of Infection
- Excessive redness, swelling, pus, or severe pain could indicate infection.
- If you notice any of these symptoms, contact a healthcare professional or reach out to us for guidance.
Traditional Method:
1. Leave the Bandage On
- Your artist will cover your new tattoo with a sterile bandage or wrap.
- Leave this on for 2–4 hours, unless otherwise advised.
2. Wash Your Hands First
- Before touching your tattoo, always wash your hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap.
3. Clean Your Tattoo
- Gently remove the bandage.
- Wash the tattoo using lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free antibacterial soap.
- Use your fingertips only — no washcloths, sponges, or loofahs.
- Do not scrub.
- Pat dry with a clean paper towel or allow it to air-dry naturally.
4. Apply a Thin Layer of Ointment
- Once your tattoo is dry, apply a thin layer of tattoo-safe ointment (like Aquaphor or A&D).
- Avoid over-applying — your tattoo needs to breathe.
5. Keep It Moisturized
- For the next 2–3 days, continue using ointment 2–3 times daily.
- After that, switch to a fragrance-free lotion to keep your skin hydrated.
6. Avoid the Following While Healing
- No swimming in pools, lakes, oceans, or hot tubs.
- No baths — stick to showers.
- No sun exposure or tanning beds.
- No scratching or peeling — even if it itches.
- Avoid tight clothing that may rub against the tattoo.
7. Peeling and Itching Are Normal
- Your tattoo may begin to peel and itch like a sunburn. This is a natural part of healing.
- Do not scratch, pick, or peel at your tattoo.
8. Healing Time
- Tattoos generally heal within 2–4 weeks, depending on placement and your body’s healing process.
- It may appear slightly dull or faded until the skin fully regenerates — this is normal.
9. Watch for Signs of Infection
- Redness, swelling, pus, or severe pain may indicate infection.
- If you notice any of these symptoms, please contact a medical professional or reach out to us directly.
